Cancer Community Nippising: Look Good, Dress for Success

Esthetics & Garments

During cancer treatment, feeling good about how you look can be an important part of maintaining your confidence and well-being. Wearing a wig can help you regain a sense of normalcy and comfort if hair loss occurs, while using skincare products tailored to your changing needs can soothe and nourish your skin, which may be affected by treatments. There are also specialised garments that you may want during or after treatment. Taking time for these small self-care rituals can make a big difference in how you feel, helping you embrace your beauty and strength, no matter what.

PICC Line Cuffs

Many cancer patients get a long term I.V. line put in their upper arm to receive their chemotherapy. These are called PICC lines.

The PICC line cuff is a fashionable sleeve in 4 way stretch material that can be worn over the line on the upper arm. It reduces the worry of tearing the bandaging that holds it in place. But it also conceals it so the person doesn’t have to look sick or medicalized to the people around them. They come in various sizes and colors, and it's a good idea to have a few on hand for easy washing. The cuffs are available through the North Bay Chemotherapy unit. The staff will help you with sizing. These cuffs are provided at no cost and sewn by volunteers.

* If you would like to learn how to make these and organize a group to supply your local chemotherapy unit, please contact us.

It is the only product on the market to have a securing pocket technology to safely store and secure PICC Lines and extensions.  The two-layer design provides safe securement that keeps the patient in mind and was functionally designed to reduce dependency on adhesive products. Hypoallergenic cotton offers high quality comfort first, breathable material, with no added skin irritants such as coatings, latex or rubber. Product is easily washable in a machine washer and dryer, or by hand in a hospital.

Mastectomy Bras & Accessories

Some women get breast reconstruction at the time of surgery. For those that do not, there are cosmetic options available.

Mastectomy bras are made to fit breast forms or prostheses. Both the bras and the breast forms come in a variety of types, sizes and shapes. They are made to mimic the shape and weight of the breast. There are experienced certified mastectomy fitters that can provide emotional support and expertise in fitting mastectomy products if this is something you choose.

Generally, it takes 6-8 weeks to heal post-mastectomy before you can wear most breast forms. However, “Knitted Knockers” are a light-weight, knitted breast form that can be worn immediately.

  • Knitted Knockers

The logo for knitted knockers of canada has a pink ribbon on it.

Availability: North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, Online

Knitted Knockers are special handmade knitted breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. Some women find traditional breast prosthetics too expensive, heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable. Also traditional prostheses often cannot be worn for 6-8 weeks after surgery and need to be ordered. Knockers can be worn directly after your surgery.

Knitted knockers are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast. Knitted knockers can also be used to fill the gap for breasts that are uneven and easily adapted for those going through reconstruction by simply removing some of the stuffing.

Some women prefer to weight their knocker with a pebble or a small stitch in the bra to keep them in place.  The knitted knocker can also be used in your prosthetic bra or in a post-op camisole as a lightweight choice.

These are available for FREE. They are knitted with love by our community members.

See knittedknockerscanada.com for more information. Patterns and video tutorials are available on this website. These were developed and shared by knittedknockers.org

Breast Prosthesis

A breast prosthesis (put the link here for further information? See link below) is an artificial breast form that can be put in a bra after breast surgery. These can be used instead of breast reconstruction surgery or while awaiting reconstruction. There is some funding for this through the Ontario assistive devices program and the Canadian Cancer centre.

Lymphedema Garments

Lymphedema compression garments are specially designed clothing, such as sleeves, stockings, or wraps, that apply gentle pressure to the affected area, usually the arms, legs,  torso, head, neck and genital areas. These garments help reduce swelling by promoting the flow of lymph fluid and preventing it from accumulating in tissues. They are commonly used in the treatment of lymphedema to manage symptoms, improve mobility, and reduce the risk of complications, such as infections. The garments are typically made of elastic materials and come in various sizes and compression levels, tailored to each individual’s needs.
